Frequently Asked Questions
What makes Butterfly different from other handheld ultrasound devices?

The most unique difference is that Butterfly is the first and only Ultrasound-on-ChipTM ultrasound. This means that we have replaced the traditional piezoelectric crystals, which are expensive to produce and fragile, with a semiconductor chip similar to what you would find in a smartphone. This allows for improved versatility on one single probe, improved durability of the probe, and a significant reduction in price. For a more in-depth comparison of Butterfly versus other handheld devices, click here.
What is the difference between the iQ+ Vet and the iQ3 Vet?

The most notable difference between the two is image quality improvements with iQ3 Vet. Our newest iQ3 Vet probe has a larger frequency range than our iQ+ Vet, meaning clearer, higher resolution images. There is also an increase in imaging depth from 1-35cm (compared to 1-30cm in the iQ+ Vet). The iQ3 Vet has improved equine musculoskeletal (MSK) filters, pulse wave doppler, and power doppler. What species can I image with a Butterfly probe? What is the depth range?

The Butterfly probe can be used to image anything from tree frogs to elephants (and we have!). With a depth range from 1-35cm, this makes Butterfly the most versatile probe on the market.
What type of probe is the Butterfly iQ+ Vet or iQ3 Vet?

Butterfly is powered by a semiconductor chip instead of piezoelectric crystals, which allows it to emit sound waves in different ways, simply by changing the preset. This means the probe can function as a linear, curvilinear, or phased array probe, depending on the preset you choose.
Is there an option to use the Butterfly wirelessly?

Butterfly is a wired device and cannot be used wirelessly. This ensures that what you are scanning is what you see on the screen, without any possible delays or lags in connection over Bluetooth or WiFi. Butterfly can be used without an internet or Bluetooth connection, enabling use in various practice and ambulatory settings.
How long does the battery last? Will it drain the battery of my phone or tablet?

The battery for the iQ3 and iQ+ Vet will last for approximately 2 hours of continuous scanning. For intermittent scanning, the battery will often last for much longer before requiring charging. The Butterfly probe has its own internal battery and will never pull power from the device it is plugged into. The probes have internal temperature regulation, preventing overheating or the need for an external cooling fan.
What devices are Butterfly compatible with?

Butterfly is compatible with many Apple and Android phones and tablets. All units come with both a lightning and USB-C cord, which are interchangeable depending on the device you are using. For a full list of compatible devices, click here.
Can I save my images and cine clips? Where do they get saved?

Yes, saving your study is not only possible, but encouraged! Studies get saved to your Butterfly cloud account. Studies can also be sent to DICOM or your practice management software from your cloud account, if desired.
Does Butterfly integrate with DICOM/PACS and veterinary practice management software?

Yes! We integrate with most veterinary practice management software systems. Studies that are saved to your Butterfly cloud can be uploaded to your existing PACS system, streamlining patient care and ensuring all information is in one place.
Do you provide TeleGuidance™? Is this the same as a consultation with a radiologist?

Butterfly’s TeleGuidance™ feature provides users the ability to connect with a colleague for real-time collaboration on a case that is being scanned. We do not have any radiologists on-staff with Butterfly. For a demo of our Butterfly TeleGuidance™, click here.
Do I have to have software for my Butterfly to work?

Yes, the Butterfly iQ – Ultrasound app is required for use of your Butterfly probe.
Do I have to pay a monthly or annual subscription fee for the software?

The Butterfly iQ – Ultrasound app is free to download. We have two options available for cloud membership, where studies can be saved and shared. You can either pay an annual subscription fee, or purchase a lifetime membership to the cloud with unlimited cloud storage, anonymous study sharing, and 5 years of software access guaranteed with no recurring fees. We do not offer monthly subscriptions.
Do you work with distribution? Are there differences in cost between distributors?

We distribute through Midwest Vet, PennVet, and Patterson. Any differences in price is due to shipping costs between distributors. If you do not work with any of the distributors listed, you can always purchase directly from us.
Do you offer ultrasound training or courses?

Our website and app contain a large library of training and support videos that can be accessed at any time. Additionally, we host several free CE events and webinars a year on various ultrasound topics.
Do you offer trials of the probe before purchase?

Demo units are limited, but you can speak with a sales specialist for more information. All purchases come with a 30 day money-back guarantee. If you are not satisfied with your purchase, you may return it for a full refund within 30 days.
